Stay Safe...Garyco What is the secret for success in advancing hand lines on average fire call? First, size up, know where the fire is going and how you are going to push it out and away from any potential victims. Second is communication with the vent crew to make sure the dance is coordinated. Third is being ready as a team to advance the line. Most important of all, practice, practice and more practice. The things that hurt the operation on the fire ground are usually the stupid little things, like not clearing the hose bed, not clearing all the kinks out of the line, getting hung up at the entry point or miscalculating the amount of hose needed to make the furthest point. Most of these common problems can be solved through constant drilling, especially with the group of members most likely to be on the line. The more you drill advancing the line the easier it will get and many of the small problems will go away or you’ll be able to anticipate the problems and avoid them. More lives have been saved by properly positioned and operating handlines than any other fireground action. The engine company's primary task at a structure fire is to quickly stretch a handline and knock the fire down. Prompt water accomplishes the following: * There is a better chance for firefighters to rescue or remove fire victims. * There is less chance of firefighter injury. * There is less chance of fire extension.
